The capital letter alphabet has an anomaly in the sequence of letters. The line ends with V X, and the W Y Z are stitched below. Mary was 12 years old when she stitched this sampler in 1891, mainly using cross stitch over 2 threads on approximately 24ct Penelope canvas. Holmfirth rapidly expanded in the 1800s due to the growing cloth trade and the production of stone and slates from the surrounding quarries. The peaceful, rural area was gone forever as around 60 textile mills were built, employing hundreds of men, women, and children. Today, it is the renowned location of the British TV classic Last of the Summer Wine and as the home of another British tradition, Bamforth’s saucy seaside postcards!

Amanda was the fourth of ten children born to Benjamin Brown, a wool corder, and his wife Hannah. She was baptised on July 27 at the Anglican church of Holy Trinity. In the 1851 census return, Amanda was recorded as a dressmaker.

On July 26, 1857, at the age of 23, Amanda married William Whitehead, a fuller, at All Hallows Church in Kirkburton. She was not able to sign her name on the marriage record and instead made her mark with an “X”. Amanda and William had two sons before William’s early death in 1863. Their second son died in 1864 and the following year Amanda married Joshua Battye, a fuller. They lived in Holmbridge, a small village near Holmfirth. Together they had seven children. Joshua died in 1908.

The 1911 census finds Amanda a widow living alone at 58 Brook Lane, Golcar. The village is about 7.5 miles from Holmfirth. We suspect that she moved to Golcar to be close to one of her children who lived in the village

Amanda outlived two husbands and five of her children; she died in the October of 1911, aged 77 years.

The sampler is worked with cross stitched over two threads of linen and some Algerian eyelets. With a young boy, dressed as a Cavalier and riding a rocking horse, it is a lovely heirloom sampler to stitch for a child. Rocking horses have been loved by children for many centuries. Their history can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when a popular children’s toy was the hobby horse. An artificial horse’s head attached to a long stick was placed between the child’s legs and they would ride the horse around. In the 16th Century the hobby horse was replaced by the barrel horse. A circular log supported by four legs and adorned with a horse head. The rocking horse in its current form appeared in the early 17th century. Bow rockers were invented, introducing rocking to the world of toy horses. It was found that they could easily topple over as they were heavy and had a high centre of gravity. The Victorians introduced a “safety stand” and this is the rocking horse that we know today.

Eliza was born on 18 May, 1807 in the village of Heslington close to the city of York in Northern England. She was christened the next day. Her Father was the village School Master and the Parish clerk. At the age of 12 Eliza recorded that her sampler was “wrought with the help of her mother at Heslington School” so we can presume that her mother taught the young girls needlework.

The school was built in 1795 in a back lane (now School Lane) at the expense of the village. We know that the school was a neat red brick building with two ground floor rooms and an attic. The master’s residence was attached. It could accommodate 90 children, but had an average attendance of 56. In the year 1835 twenty boys and twenty girls were taught there at their parents’ expense.

Eliza was recorded in the 1841 census as living with her father (her mother having died) in Heslington and the following year at the late age of 35 Eliza married George Hagston a shoemaker. They had a son, John Skelton Hagston, in 1843 giving him her father’s name and a daughter, Elizabeth Bramley Hagston, in 1846, giving the baby her mother’s name. Eliza passed away in 1848 at only 41.

The verse that Eliza chose for her sampler was taken from “Eve’s Hymn” from a long lost Oratorio called “The Death of Abel” written in 1755 by Thomas Augustine Arne, an English Composer who is better known as the composer of “Rule Britannia” and “God Save the Queen”.

Life’s road let me cautiously view, And longer disdain to be wise, Forebearing such Paths to Pursue, As my reason should hate or despise, To crown both my age and my youth, Let me mark where religion has trod, Since nothing but virtue and truth, Can reach to the throne of my God.

The Hymn also appears in Oliver Goldsmith’s book “The Citizen of the World” written in 1762. Today, we celebrate the life of Mary Cornwall through the reproduction of her sampler.

Scotland’s family history records are not the easiest ones to research, and without an age to indicate a year of birth, we cannot pinpoint Mary with certainty. However, a possible Mary was born on March 24, 1819. She was baptised in Saint Cuthberts in Edinburgh on April 25th. Her parents were James Cornwall and his wife Elizabeth, née Sime.
One of the distinguishing features of Scottish samplers are the inclusion of family initials. Mary’s parents’ initials matched the first two recorded by Mary on her sampler. Mary had a brother Thomas and a sister Margaret, a TC and an MC are the third and fourth set of initials on her sampler.

There was often more than one alphabet worked on a sampler. We were particularly taken with the second alphabet Mary worked. Whilst it is the same font as the first, it is worked with four-sided stitch. Note the double “V”.

Girls began to learn needlework by stitching a marking sampler (a primer). Marking samplers served a dual purpose – they taught a child basic embroidery technique and the alphabet and numbers. The letters and numbers learned while embroidering a marking sampler were especially useful, since it was important that a wife was able to keep track of her linens. This was accomplished by marking them, usually in a cross stitch, with her initials and a number. In stitching her sampler, Mary demonstrated that she had mastered the art of marking.

Mary also evidenced that she could work other stitches.

Mary worked her sampler primarily in cross stitch over two threads of linen, together with a section under her name which she worked in cross stitch over four threads of linen. This will work up very quickly. She used cross stitch over one thread to record her name. The other stitches used are backstitch, alternating double backstitch, Algerian eyelet, and four-sided stitch.

Mary’s sampler has been painstakingly reproduced by Lisa Brown and the model lovingly stitched by Nicola Parkman. At the very core of Hands Across the Sea Samplers there is a team of needleworkers who are passionate about antique samplers and being able to share those samplers with you.

Thread Legend
Mary’s delightful monochrome sampler has been reproduced using Soie 100.3 from Au Ver à Soie. Regrettably, we were unable to identify our Mary in family history records, as there were many Mary Locks in the time frame.

We may surmise that Mary came from a family that was financially comfortable. A girl from a poor family probably would have stitched her sampler with cotton or wool. Mary’s sampler was stitched with silks on finely woven linen. Silks were expensive, and the use of 18 different colours in Mary’s sampler suggests that her parents could provide their daughter with a “good” education.

From a very early age girls spent much of the time given to their education working with their needle. In stitching their samplers the young girls learnt religious instruction, morality, virtue, history, geography, mathematics, literature, and grammar.

Mary may have been educated at home by a governess or attended a local fee-paying school or even a boarding school. Whether she was taught by a governess or a school mistress, needlework would have played a big part in her education. It was one of the necessary accomplishments a young lady was required to master. It was considered one of the “female arts”, which were important in the preparation for marrying “well” and essential domestic skills needed by the mistress of a household. At a time when everything was hand-sewn, sewing skills were essential regardless of the family’s financial standing.

Mary’s sampler demonstrates her diligence, and the neat stitching and attention to detail are indicative of her pride and enjoyment in her work. We are fortunate that Mary’s sampler was treasured, first by her and her parents and then by her descendants. A glorious floral border surrounds decorative rows of vines laden with flowers, a band of Irish stitch (also known as Florentine and flame stitch), rows of alphabets worked both in cross stitch and eyelet stitch. The verse is worked with red silk and a small black dog sits incongruously atop a flower head. The sampler is reminiscent of the samplers stitched by Abigail Dingle in 1762 and Jane Brunton in 1763. We suspect that the three samplers were worked under the same needlework teacher in Norwich.

On the reverse of Sarah’s sampler it is recorded that this was “Mrs Lungley’s work”. From family history records we know that Sarah was 11 years old when she finished her sampler. She was born on Tuesday, July 17 in the year 1759 in Norwich in the county of Norfolk. She was named after a sister who was born and died in 1755. Sarah’s baptism on August 6 was recorded in the non-conformist records for the Old Meeting in Norwich.

Sarah’s parents were John Reymes and his wife Alice, née Collett. John’s family can be traced back to the early 1400s in Norfolk. We know that John was an eminent merchant and manufacturer. The Reymes family lived in St George Colegate, one of the mediaeval parishes of the city of Norwich.

Sarah married Samuel Lungley on Monday, September 5 in the year 1785. Samuel was from Long Melford in the county of Suffolk. Sarah and Samuel’s marriage was conducted by licence and both John and Alice were present. A report of the marriage appeared in the Norfolk Chronicle on Saturday, September 10. Samuel was a farmer, and we suspect a wealthy one.

Sarah died at the age of 33 on November 7, 1792, which is such a young age. We wonder if she died in childbirth. It must have been very sad for her husband and both her parents who outlived her.

Sarah’s sampler is predominantly worked with cross stitch laid over two threads of linen. The verse is worked in cross stitch over one thread of linen. Sarah also used Algerian eyelets over two and four threads, and Irish stitch. The sampler is suitable for confident beginners through to advanced needleworkers.

Thread Legend
Sarah’s sampler has been reproduced using a palette of twenty colours carefully matched to the colours found on the reverse of the sampler. The majority of Scottish samplers were stitched in the Scottish School System or with a teacher who specialized in sewing and embroidery. Learning to sew was a very important lesson for girls.

The sampler’s colourful, trailing rose vine border contains several motifs associated with Scottish school girl samplers. The large building featured is found on many Scottish samplers and it is possible that it is a School. The two story pediment building has a lawn in front stitched in varying shades of green together with an imposing set of gates, stone wall and picket fence.

Other motifs of note on the sampler include two six tailed peacocks; a lion with his tail curved over his back in an “S” shape; a pyramid of strawberries; a beautiful basket filled with flowers and a basket of fruit; numerous birds, including eagles or phoenixes and a stylised swan; deer, rabbits, cat and dog. Diamond shaped fir trees, worked in cross stitch, often seen in Scottish samplers are featured together with four unusual and distinctive stem and satin stitched trees which we have carefully counted out for you within the graph. A beautiful moss rose and Scotland’s national floral emblem, the thistle, are also featured.

There is a story that Scotland was under attack by marauding Vikings and the attack was foiled when one of the Vikings stepped on a thistle and cried out alerting the Scots. Numerous family initials are also included along with a collection of crowns. Crowns were worked to show the ranks of nobility and range from king, prince, duke, marquis, earl, viscount to baron. They were used above parents’ and family initials.

Whilst we have been unable to trace Helen’s birth records from the initials stitched within the sampler we believe her parents to be John Kedslie and Alison (Aleson) Haig and siblings Anthony, Elizabeth and Alexander, who were all born in the years around Helen’s birth. Elizabeth is of particular interest as she was christened in 1803 and it is possible that Helen’s absence from the records is due to her being “Elizabeth Helen Kedslie”. The initials found in her parent’s family tree also match those in the sampler.

The family were from the Royal Burgh of Lauder, a town in the Scottish Borders in the historic county of Berwickshire. On the Southern Upland Way, the burgh lies 27 miles south east of Edinburgh, on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills. The sampler is well travelled having been acquired by Nicola Parkman in England, from an auction house in Canada where Kedslies from Scotland are known to have settled in the 1800’s.

Helen chose Ecclesiastes 12.1 as the verse on her sampler, and it can be found on samplers from 1763-1876. Both the Church of England and the Church of Scotland used the 1611 version of the Bible which was translated by King James VI (Scotland) and I (England) and it is still used today.

Remember now thy creator in

The days of thy youth while the

Evil days come not nor the years

Draw nigh when though shalt say

I have no pleasure in them.

Helen’s sampler has been rated as suitable for a confident intermediate or advanced stitcher. We shall never know as the young girl who finished this charming sampler on January 8th in the year 1882 did not record her Christian name. From the moment we first saw A Thomas’ sampler she has been affectionately called “The Nellies,” as her sampler features two elephants carrying howdahs.

It is easy to assume that samplers that feature exotic animals were taught either by teachers or stitched by children who had travelled to or lived in exotic places. However, this sampler is Welsh, and we believe that it was the exotic animals that travelled with the circus to the valleys of Wales. By the mid-19th century there were hundreds of circuses operating in Britain and the fairground entertainers travelled to their audiences. The circuses toured to even the smallest of towns and in the 19th century the development of the railways enabled circuses to travel further.

There is a Welsh folklore that tells a story about a Victorian travelling circus that visited the ancient market town of Tregaron in the upper Teifi Valley alongside the River Brennig in Ceredigion, West Wales. For hundreds of years cattlemen drove their herds through the town, and its twelve pubs kept the local clergy very busy in their perpetual war against the evils of drink. It is one of the most visible colours and one of the top two favourite colours of all people. It is the use of red that caused me to pause and study Amelia’s sampler. I fell in love with this sweet sampler and almost immediately started to reproduce and stitch her. She has hung on my sampler wall for some time now, and I have enjoyed her presence in my home. She is now available for you to stitch and enjoy too.

Amelia has left us some clues in her sampler which she completed in 1863. She attended Berkswell School. The village of Berkswell is situated 7 miles West of Coventry City centre.

Amelia’s birth was registered in the first quarter of the year 1852. We cannot find her baptismal records, only the entry in the civil registration of births. Amelia appears in the 1861 census living at Cornets End Lane, Meriden, Berkswell. Her father, Thomas Batchelor, had died in 1860. Her mother, Ann (née Bond), is noted as a widow and the occupier of two acres of land. Amelia’s brother William, aged 11 years, was working as a ploughboy. Ann died in 1873.

Amelia stitched her sampler between 10 to 11 years of age, almost certainly under the guidance of her teacher at Berkswell School. Amelia probably had to leave school shortly after this to help contribute to the family income.

By the 1871 census, Amelia can be found in domestic service in Leamington. By 1891 she had moved to Greenwich, London and was working for a clergyman’s widow as a cook.

Amelia was to remain in domestic service for the rest of her working life. The last position we can find her working in is as a cook for a family living in Berkeley Square in Bristol in the 1901 census.

By the 1911 census, at the age of 58 years, Amelia “a cook domestic now out of employment” is living alone at 72 Alma Vale Road, Clifton, Bristol.

On May 24, 1915 Amelia passed away at the age of 63 years. Her estate was valued at £256, equivalent to £27,000 today. Her executors were her two brothers.

Amelia never married or enjoyed having a family of her own. Her possessions in life were probably few. The sampler that she so diligently stitched as a child may have been her oldest and most precious possession at the time of her death.

Her sampler seems such a happy, cheery one. Sarah has recorded that she “finnished” her work in 1835. Unfortunately, there is no trace in family history records of a Sarah Howarth being baptised in the City of Liverpool in the relevant decades of the 1800s. Howarth is a surname of Anglo-Saxon origin most commonly found among families originating in the English counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire, especially around the village of Great Howarth near Rochdale, Lancashire and Haworth in Yorkshire.

Situated above the Worth Valley on the edge of the bleak Pennine moors, Haworth is internationally famous for its connection with the Brontë sisters. They wrote most of their novels at the Haworth Parsonage while their father was the incumbent parson at Haworth church.

Sarah’s surname is found in a variety of different interrelated spellings, including Haworth and Howorth. We have researched these variations without success and suspect that our Sarah’s family moved to Liverpool during her childhood.

Sarah’s sampler features two red carnations, a large pink rose and two anemones. Carnations are rich with symbolism, mythology and in the language of flowers the carnation’s meaning is determined by its colour. Light red symbolises admiration, while dark red represents deep love and affection. White carnations suggest pure love and good luck, purple carnations imply capriciousness, and pink carnations carry the greatest significance, beginning with the belief that they first appeared on earth from the Virgin Mary’s tears, making them the symbol of a mother’s undying love.

Anemones are part of the buttercup family and are also known as windflowers. Anemone comes from the Greek word of the same spelling, which means “the wind’s daughter.” It is the combination of “anemos”, the word for wind and the suffix “one”, which indicates a daughter. It gained this name because of myths involving the Greek gods of the four winds, but the meanings of the flower are also tied to the story of Adonis and Aphrodite. The Goddess of love kept Adonis as her companion for too long and the other gods killed him, so she wept over his grave and her tears for her fallen love grew into anemone flowers.

The Greek myths lend the anemone flower dual meanings of the arrival of spring breezes and the loss of a loved one to death. The Victorians took a slightly different slant on the loss embodied by the flower and used it to represent a forsaken love of any kind in their intricate Language of the Flowers.
hands-across-the-sea-samplers-sophia-doggett-1804-counted-cross-stitch-pattern-19th-century-english-sampler-pattern-only
Hands Across The Sea Samplers "Sophia Doggett 1804" Counted Cross Stitch Pattern 19th Century English Sampler Pattern Only
From Hands Across the Sea:

As a collector of needlework, the Micheál and Elizabeth Feller collection fired my passion for the genre of school-girl samplers. The first and most significant of these is the formation of the border. Where the majority of the Quaker medallion samplers present their half octagons with the cut edge uniformly to the outside border, this sampler dovetails that cut edge so that it alternately faces the border and then the centre of the sampler. A further unique point is the medallion in the upper left with two stylised confronting birds.”

Sophia recorded on her sampler “Nailsea 1804”. Whilst there is no record of a Quaker school in Nailsea, it is possible that Sophia was a pupil boarding at Sidcot and recorded “Nailsea” as the location of her home rather than that of the school.

Sophia married Mark May, a farmer, on April 8, 1816. Mary, their first of eight children, was baptised the following February. The family can be found in the census returns at Mays Green in the village of Puxton. It appears that her father had died by this time, and her mother can be found as the head of the household with Pricilla and two grandchildren. The sampler was described as:

“A 19th century needlework Sampler by Ann Castle, dated 1811, 45cm x 32cm, (the owners grandparents believe the image of the house in the sampler is that of Holly Cottage, 18 High Street, Wargrave, Berkshire. Ann Castle lived in the cottage which formed part of the estate of the local manor house, the (owners) grandparents lived in the house as both were in service at the local manor house, one as a chauffeur and the other as a housemaid. They continued to live at Holly Cottage after their retirement and it is possible that the sampler was in Holly Cottage while they lived there and was subsequently gifted to them at some point. While the sampler shows three upstairs windows you can see from the photo with the sampler that the middle window was bricked up during the Georgian period to avoid the window tax”.

The sampler arrived with an old photograph of Holly Cottage and a square of cardstock attached with wax seal to the reverse of the framed sampler. From the information recorded on the reverse, we learnt that Ann had died on October 27, 1823 aged 25 and that the sampler was framed on October 27, 1816 and was reframed on December 31, 1836 by John Castle in Oxford.

From this we can deduce that Ann was born in the year 1798, and we have traced an Ann, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Castle, born August 8, 1798 and baptised on August 31, 1798 at St Mary Magdalen in Oxford. We have also found in family history records her burial on November 2, 1823 at The Church of St Peter-le-Bailey on New Inn Hall Street in central Oxford.

Ann stitched three verses on her sampler.

Under the heading “On Youth” she chose “Jesus permit they sacred name to stand ….” This verse is believed to have been composed by the hymn writer John Newton (best known for “Amazing Grace”) for his niece, but it is possible that it was composed by Isaac Watts for his niece.

For “Hope” she chose “From the beginning may the almighty powers blessing bestow in never ceasing showers….” This is taken from A New Guide to the English Tongue: In Five Parts by Thomas Dilworth. The Reverend Mr Thomas Dilworth was an English cleric and author. A New Guide to the English Tongue was a widely used schoolbook, both in Great Britain and America.

“Be faithful unto Death and I will give thee a Crown of Life” is taken from Revelation 2:10. Within is a large manor house framed on both sides by poplar and pine trees. Honey-coloured stone buildings are commonly seen in England in counties such as Gloucestershire and Yorkshire. A smug cat and an inquisitive dog stand guard along with two footmen holding candles. The sampler includes other lovely motifs, such as squirrels, butterflies and birds, such as owls, peacocks, ducks, as well as two apple trees, roses and lilies. Two angels who represent the Voice of God are contained along with the verse in a meandering rose bud cartouche.

Mary Lea finished her beautiful sampler when she was 11 years of age in 1793.

Mary’s sampler has been reproduced with Au Ver à Soie d’Alger silks and the skein quantities calculated based on 1 strand on 36ct fabric.
