They may be be tiny bits clipped when you run out of thread, or longer lengths you no longer need.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe word ort reportedly comes from Middle Low German and means leftover. It was used starting in the 15th century to refer to food scraps. No word on when or why stitchers reappropriated it for leftover thread, but some say in stitching parlance ort is actually an acronym for \"old ratty threads\" or \"odd random threads\" or similar variations.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nMany stitchers save these random bits of thread, often in jars appropriately named ort jars.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nClear jar with a handmade glass disc attached to bamboo lid. The first part of the process is making a part sheet by filling a stainless steel form with bits of murrini and vitrigraph confetti. It is fired hot until the glass melts and forms one piece. Then we chop up the part sheet and fill stainless steel rings with the pieces deciding which side of the piece we want facing up. After those pieces melt and flow filling the ring, the disc is ground to fit the bamboo lid and fired again for a fire polish.
