Eight in a Square

This small Quaker style sampler was inspired by an example in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. That sampler (Accession Number: 13.69.10) was stitched by A.H. and is dated 1810. It was probably created by a student at the Quaker run Westtown Boarding School which was founded in 1799.

Whilst inspired by this example, my sampler uses some alternative Quaker medallion designs round the edge of the square which I have re-sized in order to keep the design square and to maintain balance in the design.

Also I have incorporated a full alphabet into the design as I always think a sampler looks incomplete without!

Please note that the central wreath has enough space for a few initials and the year only (eg B.J.D. 2021) if you are stitching over two. If you want to include your full name and year (eg Benjamin Drew 2021) then you will need to stitch this over one. I have included a couple of mini-samplers with the uppercase and lowercase alphabets you will need of you wish to do this.

Finished size on 32ct linen: 7.5" x 7.5"

Features eight Quaker half-medallions, a central wreath with two birds and a full alphabet.
