Palm reading, also known as palmistry, chiromancy, or chirology, is the practice of fortune-telling through the study of the palm. This fun sampler is inspired by a hand painted sign advertising ‘Palm Reading $5‘ that I spotted in the great New Orleans.

Palm reading has a long history, but the most famous palmist is Cheiro, an Irishman who studied the art under gurus in India. From his practice in London, UK, he read the palms of many famous clients including Mark Twain, Sarah Bernhardt, Mata Hari, Oscar Wilde, Grover Cleveland and Thomas Edison.

Mark Twain, a skeptic, wrote in Cheiro‘s visitor‘s book that he had "exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy".

I have shown this design in simple red on cream fabric, however I think this sampler would be great stitched up in any range of colours.
