Scottish Band

Band samplers form the oldest examples of European samplers and originated round the fifteenth century. These samplers feature rows of borders and alphabets to create a very long thin design.

Here I have taken inspiration from a number of Scottish samplers. I have created an alphabet that is decorated with backstitch that draws upon a similar alphabet stitched by Stewart Kerr in his sampler of 1770. The broad band of intertwined roses is a common feature of samplers of this date, with that of Betty Pleanderleath’s sampler of 1745 being a particular favourite. Both these samplers can be found in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland.

The broad band of intertwined roses can be found on some very old samplers, for example a version appears on the band sampler created by Mildred Mayow and dated 1633, now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
