Description
“Vernaaide Linten” translates as “sewn ribbons”. These ribbons are found on the island of Marken and form an integral part of the traditional costume of the women on this island in the former Zuiderzee (“southern sea”) in the Netherlands. I charted and reworked nine of these bands from my personal collection and worked them in the design that you see here. The illustrated 20-page booklet gives you information about the island of marken and how the traditional ribbons were worn. As there is backstitching around each of the bands, this design is not pattern keeper compatible.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

This design has a total of about 33100 crosses and 11134 backstitches and measures 267 wide and high. It features only full crosses and no specialty stitches.

The graph below gives size- and floss estimates for a wide range of materials. Floss calculations are based on working with 2 strands on 28- to 36-count linen (14- to 16-count aida). Higher counts use a single strand. You are free to stitch with as many strands as you like. For the backstitches I would always recommend using a single strand, no matter the count of your linen.

You can personalise your sampler by adding your initials to the wreath, using the alphabet at the top of the sampler.

As this is a monochrome design, you are free to select any thread and linen of your liking.
